After moving home from London at 18 and getting a job I decided to buy myself a car. I’d been saving during my time at sixth form and always seemed to save any Christmas or birthday money I received. When I was in Sixth Form a lot of people were bought cars for their 17th and 18th birthdays or for no reason at all but everything I have I’ve saved for and bought myself which I personally think makes you appreciate things more if they haven’t been handed to you on a plate.
Buying your own car gives you so much freedom to be able to just go wherever you want, whenever you want and not having to rely on public transport, or on other people giving you lifts to places. When I first got my little Fiat I absolutely loved just being able to hop in and drive to my friend’s houses or return the favours with my family for all the lifts they had given me over the years.
With all the good parts that come with owning your car there are also a lot of obvious costs that you can’t get away from. I’ve always paid for my car insurance annually, which does seem like a big chunk at the time but I prefer to pay that once a year than having something else coming out of my bank every month. Especially when most companies add more onto the payment if you choose to pay monthly. I’m quite lucky that the car I bought was had a very low road tax cost which is paid once a year also.
It is important to maintain your car and look after it to avoid any damage and repairs having to be done. I’ve remember when I was young being out with my mam and her car breaking down and her having to call the AA to come and rescue us. However, I’m pleased to say that I have never broken down in my car and hope for that to never happen. I’ve always looked after my car, making sure the oil and water levels were correct and checking my tyres. Places like Ossett Tyre House provide you with tyres and many other car services you would need while running a car and it’s handy when you can get everything done in one place. I’ve just had my first MOT done on the car as I bought it from new and it passed with no issues at all. I think maintaining my car over the years will have helped with this for sure.
I try to regularly get my car cleaned, I’ve only ever done it myself once and ended up having two of the neighbours joining in and helping me. I just prefer to take it somewhere and have it done in 10 minutes, instead of spending 3 hours doing it alone and having to run in and out of the house with a bucket of water. However, I do tend to forget about the inside of my car and I’m forever apologising when I’m the designated driver for the lack of hoovering that takes place. I do intend to change this one day and start making the inside as beautiful as it was when it was new. At the moment, an air freshener is as far as it goes.
