So you’ve decided that you’re going to get yourself a pet to add to the family. Choosing between a cat and a dog can be tricky. If you head out into the street and ask a dozen people whether they are cat or dog people, you will receive a dozen very definite and firm answers. It’s very rare that you find a person who is both. Dogs and cats define and separate people’s personalities. However, what do you do when you have no idea whether you prefer cats or dogs? Read on to find out which four legged companion could be right for you.
Felines are wonderful creatures and require very little looking after. Sure, you might need to feed them, clean the litter every day, and make sure that they don’t get fleas or worms, but that’s about it. There’s no need to take them for walks (unless you’re after the eccentric pet owner look) and you don’t have to worry about ‘fear of missing out’ syndrome.
Cat’s are naturally aloof and want their own space. This doesn’t mean that they don’t love attention, but it’s very much on their terms. They will snuggle on your lap for chin rubs and strokes, and while you are finding the whole set up relaxing and cozy, once they’ve had enough they’ll leap down without even an inkling of a thank you or a nuzzle of love.
When considering how to prepare for a new cat, all you need is a few toys, a tower for them to scratch and some bowls. Cats get acquainted with your environment with ease and don’t require too much attention. Leaving them to sniff out your pad, make themselves at home and find their feet is what your moggy will prefer. You feline friend will be fun to have around, find themselves in ludicrous positions and have you on your toes. But you are still free to carry on your daily duties without having to worry about your pet.
Dogs require more looking after and companionship. The thing with a dog is that they are looking at you as a friend or parent rather than a lodger or owner. A dog wants to be with you, share your life and have you around. If you work nine to five every day and there is no one at home to look after a dog, then you shouldn’t be looking into a canine companion. Dogs need company, whereas cats can take it or leave it.
If you own a dog, you can expect to be outside walking them twice a day, giving them belly rubs numerous times a day, playing fetch and having them snuggle up with you to sleep. You don’t need them in bed with you but they will require more love, affection and attention. This isn’t a negative if you require a companion that gives affection as much as he receives it. Dogs are loving, fun and friendly, when trained correctly. The puppy days can be testing but get them through the difficult teething stage, and they are your friend for life.
Mutts are man’s best friend for a reason. If you want a new family member that is more involved in family life, then a dog is for you.
