I’ve always absolutely loved cooking, from a young age it has always been a passion of mine. I love trying new things and pretty much like all kinds of food, I’m not fussy at all. Except onions in quiche, I feel that is the only thing I can think of that I wouldn’t want to eat. However, during the week I tend to make the same two/three meals over and over again, I know, very boring….
My boyfriend was pleased to hear that this week was going to be something different. We were sent a box of goodies from Gousto which we were both very excited about. There is a large choice of recipes available on their website which you can choose from, which vary each week and to be honest we struggled to choose which recipe we wanted as they all sounded amazing. Even the vegetarian options looked unreal, which is not something I’d normally say. We narrowed the choices down and went with Sri Lankan Crab Curry, simply because crab is not something I’d normally buy and we both love all types of curry.
The parcel comes with a card showing you exactly what the meal should look like, all of the ingredients involved and the method for cooking it. I found the instructions very easy to follow considering I rarely use recipes. I normally tend to just combine ingredients in a wok and make my own ‘creations’ as I like to call it. There was even a Gousto wooden spoon included which was a nice touch.
Each ingredient is packaged separately, labelled and measured out perfectly for the amount needed in the recipe. This is really handy for when you are trying to read the next step and cook at the same time so you can just grab the next item and throw it in. I found the method was really organised and everything was done in perfect time with each other. As the kettle boiled I was chopping away at the veg. Then as the rice was boiling I was making the paste, so it all worked out well with timing.
Neither of us really like cucumber, however part of the recipe did include a cucumber salad. I was thinking about just skipping this part but I thought I’d just make it any way and see what it tasted like. It was actually beautiful! All of the ingredients in this recipe were so fresh and colourful. The cucumber salad actually made the meal to be honest, it all tasted amazing altogether.
On the recipe card the estimated cooking time was 25 minutes and it literally took exactly that. Which is perfect because on a weeknight I don’t really have much time to spend cooking for hours and tend to stick to quick and easy meals until the weekend when I can spend longer in the kitchen. The rice was fluffy and it was surprising how much of it there was. There was not much crab to be honest, especially for two people so we were surprised at how filling the meal was. The brown crab went into the sauce and the white crab sprinkled on top once the meal was finished. It was so fresh and tasty and was a nice change instead of eating chicken every night.
The actual curry was so flavoursome and thick and all of the flavours went really well together. We both absolutely loved the meal and I will definitely be making this again for us. On your online account with Gousto it stores all of the meals you’ve chosen and made in the past so you can look back at your cookbook to reuse the recipes. I look forward to making the next meal with Gousto and I have high hopes after tonight’s meal!
